Phase One of Hike & Bike Trail Opening in Pearland

Five years ago, the Pearland City Council created the Hike & Bike plan. Now the city will be celebrating the completion of phase one of the Mary’s Creek Trail between Centennial Park and FM 1128 / Manvel Road. This phase includes more than 2 miles of hike & bike trail as well as picnic areas, seating areas, and way finding/educational signage about native birds, reptiles and insects.

The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Mary’s Creek Trail will be Monday, April 16 from 5 to 5:30 at Centennial Park on McLean Road.

Toll Road Coming To 288?

The Texas Department of Transportation will be voing on Tuesday, April 10 on projects to add toll lanes to Highway 288. With the population growth in Pearland and Brazoria County during the past 10 years and no improvements on 288, the highway is now included on TxDOT’s 100 most-congested road segments list.

The projects under consideration fall into the Harris County section of Highway 288. No word yet on improvements to the Brazoria County section

Sam’s? In Pearland?

According to Houston Chronicle real estate blogger Nancy Sarnoff, Sam’s Club is expected to start construction on a store this spring in Pearland. The store is to be located on the southbound 288 feeder at Discovery Bay Drive (between Shadow Creek Parkway and 518) . An October opening is anticipated.

Mosquito Mayhem

How bad are theese mosquitos at your house … your office … in your car … when you go out to get the mail or take the dog for a walk?

The City of Pearland recently sent out this message:

Mosquito control in Pearland is handled by the counties. Pearland is part of
several counties, and the mosquito control numbers for each are listed below:

The good news from Harris County Public Health is that the cooler temperatures later this week could diminish the mosquito numbers.

Recommendations from people also include Cutter spray; apple cider vinegar in shallow dishes; and boiling garlic in water, adding that to a gallon of water with some kitchen soap, and spraying the yard and bushes. Apparently mosquitos don’t like Italian food.

Just how hot was it this summer in Houston?

We actually broke the record this summer. According to Eric Berger, the Houston Chronicle’s Science Guy and the National Weather Service, August 27, 2011 was the hottest day in the history of Houston. 109!

The good news is that we received more than 5 inches of rain last weekend although there isn’t much of a chance of seeing any more for the next week or so. However, we will see Fall temperatures with highs in the mid 70′s by Tuesday or Wednesday.

If you’re in the market for a home, you couldn’t ask for better weather as you visit some of your favorites.

National Night Out

This year’s National Night Out in Pearland will be Tuesday, October 4th. The 2011 theme is “Neighbors Knowing Neighbors”. Join together with your neighbors and organize block parties.

Pearland Police Department’s Community Services Division is taking Block Party registrations now that will allow police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel to coordinate their visits to neighborhood get-togethers. Here’s the link to the registration page.

This is a great way to join in the fight against crime.

Early Voting in Pearland City Council Runoff

The runoff for a seat on the Pearland City Council will be June 25. The dates and times for early voting are Monday, June 13th through Friday, June 17th from 8 am to 5 pm. On Saturday, June 18th, voting will take place between 7 am and 7 pm. The polls will also be open on Monday and Tuesday, June 20th and 21st from 7 am to 7 pm.

Votes can be cast at the Westside Event Center or the JP Courtroom on Grand Ave.
